The Medicaid EHR Incentive Program provides financial incentives to Eligible Hospitals and Eligible Professionals to adopt, implement, upgrade and demonstrate Meaningful Use (MU) of Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT).
The program is administered through partnerships between CMS and the state Medicaid agencies, such as MassHealth in Massachusetts. MassHealth contracted MeHI to support and process the incentive applications in the Commonwealth.
New: Promoting Interoperability (PI) Programs
In 2018, CMS renamed the EHR Incentive Programs to the Promoting Interoperability (PI) Programs, which covers both the HITECH and MACRA programs. As such, the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program is now part of the PI Programs.
CMS now officially refers to the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program as the Medicaid Promoting Interoperability Program. Please note that Massachusetts has not updated the program's name, but may do so in the future.
Incentives for Eligible Hospitals (EHs)
Notice: For Program Year 2019 and beyond, the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program is no longer available to Eligible Hospitals in Massachusetts. The information for EHs on this website will remain available for reference for past participants.
Eligible Hospitals include both Acute Care Hospitals (including Cancer Hospitals and Critical Access Hospitals), and Children's Hospitals. If an EH meets the eligibility criteria, it can potentially earn millions of dollars in financial incentives. Review the Eligible Hospitals page for the incentive details and eligibility criteria.
Incentives for Eligible Professionals (EPs)
Eligible Professionals include Physicians, Nurse Practitioners, Certified Nurse-Midwives, Dentists, Pediatricians, Psychiatric Clinical Nurse Specialists and certain Physician Assistants. If EPs meet the eligibility criteria, they can earn up to $63,750 in financial incentives. Review the Eligible Professionals page for the incentive details and eligibility criteria. Note: When EPs work at an EH, both the EPs and EH can apply, even if the EPs and EH use the same CEHRT. For details, review the Eligible Professionals page.
