Governor's Council to Address Aging in Massachusetts
In April 2017, Governor Baker established the Governor’s Council to Address Aging in Massachusetts to develop a plan to promote healthy aging in the Commonwealth. The council brings together leaders from the aging, business, government, nonprofit, technology, education, transportation, housing, and health care sectors to advise on innovative policies and best practices to support and engage older residents.
In April 2018, the Council released their initial blueprint recommendations designed to achieve the goal of making the Commonwealth the most age-friendly state for people
of all ages. Their blueprint focuses on four main opportunity areas: improving economic security; ensuring access and affordabilty of services; promoting age-friendly communities; and facilitating connections and engagement.
Cross-cutting themes informing all of the Council’s recommendations are promoting access, equity, cultural competency and inclusion, as well as leveraging innovation and technology.

Massachusetts Joins AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities
In January 2018, Massachusetts became the second state in the nation to enroll in the AARP Network of Age-Friendly Communities. The AARP program is an affiliate of the World Health Organization’s Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Program, an international effort launched in 2006 to help cities prepare for rapid population aging. This action demonstrates Massachusetts’ commitment to ensuring that the Commonwealth promotes healthy aging for all residents, allowing people to live more easily and comfortably in their homes and communities as they age.
The Massachusetts Healthy Aging Collaborative
The Massachusetts Healthy Aging Collaborative (MHAC) is a network of leaders who have come together to advance healthy aging. MHAC has identified and adopted a two-part model – evidence-based programs and health promotion programs – that aligns with the World Health Organization’s definition of active aging, supporting activities that “optimize opportunities for health, participation and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.”
