On October 6, 2015, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released final rules that simplify Meaningful Use (MU) and Certified Electronic Health Record Technology (CEHRT) requirements, add new flexibility for providers to make electronic health information available when and where it matters most, and allow healthcare providers and consumers to securely exchange electronic health information.
The MU modifications outlined in these final rules are designed to better align existing MU requirements with Stage 3 and include significant changes to MU objectives, measures, reporting periods, and timelines. The Final Rules impact all providers and organizations participating in the Medicaid and Medicare EHR Incentive Payment Programs, as well as those attesting to MU to avoid Medicare payment adjustments.
For more information about the Final Rules, review the CMS announcement or the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services' press release. You may read in its entirety, theCMS Final Rule and the ONC Final Rule. Also, ONC hosted a webinar last week on the 2015 Edition Health IT certification criteria rule and the presentation slides are available .
