Privacy and Security in Health IT

With the adoption of healthcare information technology increasing at a rapid rate, the privacy and security of patient healthcare information is of utmost importance.   The face of health care is changing as new technologies are being developed and implemented across the healthcare delivery system.  Paper records are being replaced by electronic health records (EHRs) and patients are able to access their records via the internet.  And, Health information exchanges (HIEs) will give providers the ability to access patient records from outside of their network.  These technologies will improve the quality of healthcare, reduce costs, and increase patient involvement.  While there are many benefits to healthcare IT, the associated privacy and security issues need to continue to be a priority.
